Frost damage in plants

At Plant Power Products BV, we advise you on plants affected by frost damage and support you in the recovery and protection of your crops during cold periods. Plants with frost damage often experience severe stress, which can lead to crop loss.

What is frost damage and how can you treat your plants?

Frost damage in plants occurs when ice forms inside plant cells, causing cell walls to rupture and tissue to die. This may appear as browning leaves, soft stems and dead upper plant parts, although the damage sometimes only becomes visible later during regrowth. You can limit this damage by carefully monitoring affected crops and pruning only in spring, once the extent of the damage is clear. Strategic irrigation shortly before expected frost periods can also reduce the risk of frost damage, provided timing and water application are carefully managed. In addition, you may consider using CultaCoat: this environmentally friendly coating forms a thin film over roots, bulbs and tubers, reduces evaporation and thereby increases the frost resistance of plants. In cases of abiotic stress, such as frost, substances such as chitosan can strengthen plant defence mechanisms and improve recovery capacity.

Prevent frost damage

Light frost versus severe frost

For plants affected by frost damage, the difference between light and severe frost can have major consequences. With light frost, recovery is often possible: young leaves may show discolouration, while underground parts remain intact and can regrow. In such cases, it is wise to wait and leave dead parts in place as protection until new growth becomes visible. With severe frost, the risks are greater: structures such as stems or buds may die completely, and deeply rooted parts may suffer permanent damage. It can then be useful to remove damaged parts and consider crop rotation or strengthening measures in the soil. In both situations, a combination of practical measures and preventive strategies provides a solid basis for limiting damage and strengthening plants.

Frequently asked questions

Frost damage occurs when plants are exposed to temperatures below freezing. This can cause plant cells to freeze and burst, which may result in wilting, weakening or even plant death.

We recommend a combination of preventive measures, such as covering sensitive plants and using biological support products. Products such as CultaCoat help protect crops against frost damage.

CultaCoat forms a breathable, biodegradable film on roots, leaves, bulbs and tubers. This coating reduces evaporation and starch loss, which increases the frost resistance of plants. This makes it highly suitable for use with planting material, storage and preservation under cold conditions. Planting material kept in cold storage for several months is also protected against dehydration with CultaCoat.

We recommend its use in various situations, such as with rhizomes, cuttings, blossoms during late night frost, and the storage of bulbs or tubers. CultaCoat reduces moisture and energy loss, helping plants survive better under cold conditions.
